I would have to say King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors that fought Xerxes and the overwhelming Persian Army to the death at Thermopolae. Although all of the Spartans died, the Persians lost so many warriors in the process of fighting they lost the taste for battle. The Spartans at Thermopolae made the Persians pay so dearly for every inch of earth they claimed, they eventually lost the war due to lack of morale. This has been a model throughout history that battlefield commanders worldwide have tried to use to inspire their men to overcome vastly larger numerical forces. This is the goal of every small force that goes against a numerically superior force: To fight so fiercely and make the battle so bloody that the larger force will lose the will to fight.
I can't think of any greater group of warriors in all of history. Noone before them did such a feat, and everyone since them has wanted to be them.
The remote second place may go to the Sarmatian Cavalry that all but decimated the Roman infantry Around 150 AD. The battle lasted for four days. In losing the battle, they were considered so brave and intelligent that their lives were spared and they were incorporated into the Roman Military.
Hope this helps...

Without a doubt..man for man...and sword for sword..i would definately say the Spartans.. Under the Spartan King Leonidas..were the greatest group of Warriors the would has ever known. The Spartans held back an invasion of a Persian Army that numbered in the Hundreds of Thousands...with only 300 spartan warriors ,.Although the Spartans died ,,there has never been described in historical accounts of a battle that was so one sided,. The Spartans stood their ground against the Persians non the less..and killed many of them...at the Battle of Thermopoli...i know of no other more Heroic than the Spartans.

I believe it to be the 2000 Stripling Warriors. They were raised by a people who had faught valiantly for their cause but after all the bloodshed laid down their arms and made a promise to God to never take up arms and kill again. They lived in peace as these boys were being raised. They were taught to be honest strong upright God fearing young men who kept all the commandmants including honoring their Parents. When time came that the peoples freedoms and lives were threatned again and they were about to be forced to break their promise or be destroyed. The 2000 sons who did not make such an oath came fourth to fight. They won and not one was lost in the war. This is a true non fictional story that took place on the American continant around 64 bc.

Throughout the History of Modern man, going back to say 2000 BC there have been warriors in almost every society, like the japanese ninja, as history arches forward, the citizen warrior developed into a military warrior, a standing warrior was bread, trained and honed for only one purpose -to combat of his societies enemies. By 1000 BC specialized warriors we evolving - assains who only used to bow to kill, or the sword, or the axe. Soon special group of elite troops or units were formed in each army as specialty "teams", teams adept at silent entry, hand-to-hand combat, horsemanship, scouting, tracking, infiltrating enermy encampments and spying on the enemy from within ranks.
Then came the 12 & 13 centry evolution of more specialized military specialists - calvarymen and archers, catapultists and seigetower men. Crossbow shooters and heavy spear launchers.
By the 17th century riflery and cannon were inplay.
Then Modern day Special Operation Teams and, Special Services, Special Forces Units, OAS. OSS, SAS, SEal, Marine Re-con, Green Beret, - Korean ROCK Marines, etc
So who were the best? I think that the best are usually those who are defending their lives, their country, and their homes. There is a much different mind set and level of dedication and forlack of a better word - Heroism when a man is fighting for his homeland, to defend his family and loved ones, that compared to a hired mercenary.
So who is the more dangerous warrior - a paid 250 lb. professional Mercenary, master of any combat weapon , (including knives, underwater & above grade demolitions, deadly at hand-to-hand combat & garrot, who is going against the guy below
or a
39 year old family man, former US Navy Sea, with 3 kids and a wife, suffering from gout, a beer belly, 4 combat wounds - who is defending his HOME against the paid mercenary identified above.
I'll put my money on papa defending his home any day.

The Australian soldier - anywhere, anytime: mateship, perseverance, guts, no surrender.
Examples:
1. Gallipoli - 8 months of hard fighting due to incompetence of British commanders.
2. Battle of Beersheba 1917 - Australian Light Horse charged 6km over open ground in the face of artillery, machine guns & rifles to capture Beersheba & effectively put Turkey out of WWI (last cavalry charge)
3. Western Front 1918 - Australian forces (under Australian command) captured Villiers Bretoneux from Germans & halts German push. The town still commemorates Anzac Day & school children learn never to forget Australia.
4. Kokoda Track 1942 - Militia soldiers defeat Japanese army and prevent invasion of Australia.
5. Milne Bay 1942 - Japan's army is defeated for the first time by Australian army.
6. Battle of Long Tan 1966 - 118 Aussies defeat 2,500 North Vietnamese regulars.

There were to many great battles fought to just pick just one group as the best... Wow you really asked a most difficult question.. I am force to say that at any given time in history you had many great waring tribes of fighters....
So I am forced to give you a list of great warriors who fought some great battles.. For one reason or another... Because so many great battles we know nothing about can never be included.. And all of these waring tribe have all lost in the end........ Lets start with the Watusi then the Zulu's the Aborigines.. Then there was Hannibal then the Spartans who fought one of their greatest battles of all against the Persians, Can you imagein 300 soliders killing almost a million Presians soliders.... Then there was the Romans, then there was the Vandal's, Goths, Gauls, the Huns, the Chinese, The Visagoth... Then there was also some greatest wars where the American Indian fought other Americans Indians.... then there was Saladin and his Arabs that fought against the Crusader's.... There were some great battles fought when Japan was trying to unite under one leader... there was Montezuma when he fought a war to unite his people under one leader...... The battle of the Philippines when Americans fought the Moro's... I am sorry there was so many great waring tribes that make it impossible to choose and just name one as the greatest..... For at any given moment in history some of the greatest waring tribe always emerges to be the greatest at that moment in history... And there are plenty of more waring tribes that I let out.. That also deserved to have been mention.................................................................................

Albert Einstein is responsible for more confirmed kills than any one man in the entire history of war. And the atom bomb is here to stay so the toll is not tallied yet.
He is single handedly the greatest warrior of all time. And to all of you tacky technichal tyrants who wanna put a post it on my answer, I know he didn't invent atomic fission for war but he still invented it.
Interesting point, he has more casulties than...
The Terminator, The Predator, Rambo, Commando, All of the Universal Soldiers, McBain from the Simpsons, Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Micheal Myers, Micheal Corleone and that stupid guy from Scream.

I personally say that there are many fine examples in the answers but to sum it up i will suggest that there in all cultures there is a group sometime in there history that have a code of honor or a set of rules that they live by , and by trying to reach or live by this code have gained a type of immortality . some of the examples could include : Knights, Amazons, Samurai, as well as many of the ones already stated.

Spartans { because of the historic way they stood for themselves even if it took a lot of their lives in the process against some truly powerful opponents.} Sadly that's the art of war.
Or Warriors for Christ { who through the times continued the teachings of Jesus, glorifying God The Father, even through being jailed and/or put to death.}
Great Question!!!
