Its a strike out . the batter reaches first on either a passed ball charged to the catcher or a wild pitch which is charged to the pitcher the official scorer will decide which it is and no error is charged. I know because my boyfriend is an umpire and I keep score for my daughter's baseball team.

A Strike Out is still recorded to the pitcher, and an Error is given to the catcher as a passed ball.

If you can't cite the rule, don't answer the question.

Anyone who actually knows baseball knows that wild pitches and passed balls are NOT errors. It is flat-out incorrect to call them such.

You would record the strikeout and credit the advancement to first on a wild pitch or passed ball, whichever the case.

But again, under no circumstances is a wild pitch or a passed ball an error.

The proceeding comment that most people score the advancement "E-2" just perpetuates the myth.

Scored as a strikeout, with a passed ball error on the catcher, making the batter/runner an unearned run if he does eventually score.

if the catcher drops the third strike the batter has an oppurtunity to run but the catcher has to tag the batter or throw the ball to first if they don't in time then the batter will be safe at first.

yes it's called a drop-3rd strike. but most batters don't even run because catchers can usually throw to first without messing anything up.

Official way to score it would be :
strikeout (SO) and either a passed ball (PB - making the possible run unearned) or wild pitch (WP - making the possible run an earned run)

How most people score it:
K, E-2
