Notre Dame - 13

Nobody has gotten it right. Princeton has the most recognized National Championships in College Football, with 24.

National Championships are highly variable due to the fact that up until the BCS many sportswriters awarded the title of "National Champion" to whatever team they believed to be the best that year in their eyes. That is why you have many delusional fans, (some 'Bama fans claim up to 25 National Titles in Football!), running around claiming more championships than really exist. Here is a list of all the colleges with 3 or more RECOGNIZED National Championships:

Princeton (NJ) 24
Yale (CT) 19
Notre Dame (IN) 12
Alabama 11
Harvard (MA) 10
Southern California 10
Michigan 7
Oklahoma 7
Minnesota 6
Pittsburgh (PA) 6
Miami (FL) 5
Nebraska 5
Ohio St. 5
Army (NY) 4
Georgia Tech 4
Illinois 4
Pennsylvania 4
Tennessee 4
Texas 4
California 3
Michigan St. 3

Darkpaths got it right. It's Princeton with 24. But he's mistaken about one thing. Each year about 30 something organizations chose a national champion. Bama has been chosen by at least 1 of these organizations 25 times. So Bama fans are not claiming more national championships than exist. Just as Notre Dame fans could claim 21. But being a Bama fan myself I only count recognized national titles.

Norte Dame leads with 13 followed by Alabama and USC each with 11, then Oklahoma with 9.

However, what is considered a "national champion" could be debated.

Man... well I wont get the vote, but the answer is...

Notre Dame

They have won more titles than anyone (inc. USC).

I think some people make-up championships when listing how many they have.
