Paterno has class, old-fashioned work ethics, bleeds Penn State. Who can top that, Bobby B. can take the all time wins (the only reason why he has more wins because they count the divison II stuff), in my mind its Paterno all the way!

I believe it's the Bear but being a Tide fan all my life what else would I say. I agree with you about Paterno having class. He is a great coach and an even better person from everything I've heard about the man. Shame on all you who mentioned Hayes in the same sentence with Paterno, the Bear and the other great coaches mentioned. A coach who ends his career by throwing a punch at an opposing player has no class and is not a coach at all. But I guess OSU fans aren't really known for their class (like stomping on the opposing teams symbol at midfield like they did at UT) or being good sports (I haven't seen a single OSU fan admit they were beaten by a better team). The only time Bama played a Hayes coached OSU team they beat them 35 to 6. There are a lot of great coaches but I think what an opposing coach once said about the bear says it all "He could take hissen and beat yourn and then take yourn and beat hissen." Also remember when the Bear was at Bama it wasn't a hotbed for recruiting great football players. That's why Bama didn't have as many All Americans as a lot of their opponents. But he made his skinny undersized players believe they were better than that big name player they were facing. By the way the Bear was 4 wins and 2 losses vs Joepa.

Joe Paterno. He has been coaching since football was invented it seems like, lol

Bowden is a good coach, but, has not kept his program clean like Paterno has.

Other coaches that deserve mention are of course Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, and Bear Bryant. Bear might be the name people in Alabama would list, but in other parts of the country, he is just a former good coach. Someone in Ohio would say Hayes is greatest all time, a lot of folks in my state of Michigan would say Schembechler or Fielding Yost, but, I think JoePa trancends everything...He is really the icon of college football coaching.

I think the most noteworthy of all time and worshipped has to be Bear Bryant at Alabama. Go to campus and talk to some Bama fans and you'll see why. I know many wives that say their husbands would have attended Bear's funeral over theirs.

I am an LSU fan but nobody could get players to play for them the way Bear Bryant could. Although Alabama and LSU are huge rivals, I have nothing but the utmost respect for that man. I saw a hat at Wal-Mart the other day that reminded me of the one he used to wear and I almost bought it.
