ok. i need to know how to do this problem as it is driving me insane trying to figure it out. Lets take a certain amount like 100. I got to this number by taking another number "x" and multiplying "x" by 5.25%, adding that product to "x" and getting 100. now my question is, what is the original number and how did you get to that number?

What you have here is a basic equation, but the issue is that you have to be able to write it out. Let x be the number you are trying to solve for:

x (a number) + .0525x (that number times 5.25%) = 100

Now simplify. Remember if there isn't a visible coefficient in front of a variable, it is assumed 1.

1.0525x= 100

Now divide 1.0525 from both sides.

x= 95.01

You can check this.

95.01 + (95.01* .0525)
95.01+4.99= 100

The original number is 95.01

Let the original number be x.
Multiply x by 5.25% or 5.25/100: 5.25x/100
Add x: x + 5.25x/100 = 105.25x/100

105.25x/100 = 100
x = 100*100/105.25
= 95.012 (approx.)

Hello,
This looks like a sales tax problem.

Let x = the number then we have

5.25%x + x = 100

since x = 100%x then adding we get

105.25% x = 100 now divide by 105.25% giving us

95.01 rounded to the nearest 1/100 th.

Hope this helps!!

5.25% of x + x =100
per cent means per 100, and "of" almost always means you have to multiply. So, we get

5.25/100 (x) + x = 100
0.0525x + x = 10
1.0525x = 100
x = 100/1.0525
x = 95.011876

Verify: 95.011876 x 0.o525 + 95.011876 =99.9999

Good luck!

We can translate the wording into mathematical equations.
Multiplying "x" by 5.25%: 0.0525*x (noting that 5.25% is 0.0525)
Then adding that product by x, totalling 100: 0.0525x + x = 100
Simplifying: x (0.0525 + 1)=100
x = 100/0.0525
x = 95.01188

translation tip:
[taking another number "x" and multiplying "x" by 5.25%]
means [multiply x by 5.25%]
x * (5.25%) = x * 5.25/100 = x * .0525
= .0525 * x

let product = .0525 * x

[adding that product to "x"] [and getting] 100 means
[ product + x ] = 100

[.0525 * x + x ] = 100
1.0525 * x = 100
x = 100 / (1.0525)
x = 95.012
