I live in TX (DFW Metroplex)... and a lot of the population here drive big cars, trucks , and SUV's. Currently I drive an Acura RSX-S, and feel completely lost in traffic on the convoluted interstates. It's hard for me to see anything when I'm in bumper to bumper traffic with all the F-450's, Hummers, and Excursions surrounding me, so I was contemplating buying an SUV myself just so that I can see. So my opinion is that the big car/truck/suv thing was a trend amongst soccer moms and 'powerful' guys that spread, and now maybe people are trying to keep up just to feel safe on the road.
Other than that, they are the most idiotic vehicles should you not really need them for working or hauling purposes.

Ever look up when you go inside a parking garage? All those big dummies scraping their roofs and roof racks on those I-beams in their big trucks and SUV's. Lots of work for the body shops.
The main reason in this day and age is psychological. In the good old days, the only guys who owned pick-ups were carpenters and laborers who needed it to move constuctions supplies.
Now, the typical "big vehicle" person is quite often about five inches shorter than the height of the hood on their vehicle and have an inferiority complex.
I have always told people, "If I was bald, fat, short, and ugly I'd have to wrap one of those around me." Referring to some of those pretty trucks and other things people drive.
Trucks have one purpose, moving dead weight around and are relatively cheap reliable transportation.
In case you have not noticed, the modern day SUV looks more and more like the "Family Truckster" or station wagon we all grew up with.
Hmm, " Let's lower the center of gravity and widen the wheel base to make it safer and less prone to flipping over. Yes, that's it!
Watch Chevy Chase in the movie "Family Vacation" and you'll see one of these new model SUV's. LOL!!!
Good Luck!

Some people need big cars for space issues or safety in the case of having kids but when the person driving doesn't need the space it's mostly a status thing.
For men, having a big car must make them feel a bit more manly. Big car, big man (don't ask me where people get that idea though, cause it beats me).
Other than that I think it's just that they're quite out-there, they get you noticed, they're flashy. People notice them, because I know I do.
It's just people, showing off as per usual.

Many reasons. Sometimes women need a Minivan for the children but because they don't like Minivans they get SUVs. It's true but SUVs are kinda designed for offroad, and 99% of the time they're on the city and highway. Another reason is because in an event of collision, you're usually safer in the larger vehicle.

Most people drive them for several reasons number one, being safe within. Others drive them as they are used for secondary purposes such as hauling boats or trailers. Perhaps it their only vehicle and it is for several uses. Many businesses require large vehicles for hauling materials, etc. Gasoline is rather expensive and an issue for some folks. However, it is sometimes necessary to take that hit in order to do what you like or run your business.

Because, Iknow for guys cases, it makes them feel 'macho' or that is how my boyfriend describes it, and with the SUV's they are big because they want more storage room and such.
