unless you have an epa license to buy freon and a reclaim machine you cant do this yourself...if you do then all you need is a bullet piercing valve(saddle valve) then you would have to put this on the suction line of the unit ..this will have a place on it to connect your gauges to ....the suction line is the usually the line going to your compressor from the evaporator coil(the coil on the inside part of your ac)....then with a set of refrigeration gauges you connect the yellow line from the center of the gauges to the freon tank and then you connect the blue hose from the low pressure gauge (usually this is on the left side of the gauges)to the bullet piercing valve...there is a allen head screw in the piercing valve you screw this down to pierce a hole in the line ...then you loosen it but do not screw it all the way out...this will show you a pressure on the gauge ...on the outside circle of numbers on the gauge it should read 50 to 55 with the unit running if it does not add some freon by opening the valve on the freon tank and the blue knob on the left side of the gauges...allow the unit to pull some freon in and then check pressure again...keep doing this until unit reaches about 50 to 55 on the blue gauge....once it has done this screw the allen head screw back in on the piercing valve remove the hose from the unit and put cap back on the piercing valve....that is basically how you do this....as long as you have an epa license to buy freon and a reclaim machine you can gas up your unit anytime you want as long as it is your unit without any license from your state ....

By the time you do all the suggestions the other "answers" offered you will already have spent enough money to go and buy probably two new window units ( depending on the size), these units are not meant to be re-charged that is why they don't come with schrader valves. The cheapest HVAC technician is going to cost @ $65-$125/hour depending on where you live and the going rate in that area plus cost of supplies. Your local home improvement warehouse type store probably has new window units starting out at a cheaper price than that.

You can't buy Freon unless you have a license.Any one selling you Freon can go to jail the Freon don' cost that much, but the service call does. The last drum I bought was $89 dollars two weeks ago [that's 30lb. of R22].That will fill up 3 or 4 heat pumps.I sell it for $8 a lb.That's $151 profit.

You should be able to find a saddle valve. That valve is clamped around the tubing and when you screw the handle in it will pierce the tubing and you will have a spot to put the freon in at. You can use a low pressure gauge to read the low side and fill it up using the temp reading on the gauge.

most likely you wont be able to do it, esp on the cheap units as they do not have a shrader valve, they simply crimp the fill tube, you would need gauges and a jug of R22,
and a two piece pinch valve to put on the low side tubing,

Take it to a professional.

Coolant is under high pressure and you need to have the proper knowhow as well as gauges and a license from your state. Do not try it yourself-you may get hurt!

If you know a fitter (plumber) he will have to ''sweat'' the correct fitting on for you so that you can recharge it yourself.
