i am going to assume you are asking b/c u are coming here soon- here's some good summer activities.
-take ny watertaxi from 34th street and the river to dumbo. pizza at patzy grimaldi's- then ice cream on the promenade so u can check out the manhattan skyline. walk back to manhattan over the brooklyn bridge.
-il mulino on 3rd street and sullivan- it's the best italian restaurant in the world- no joke. afterward walk 3 blocks west to the west 4th street basketball court- these guys are better than the pros, there is music- it's lots of fun. afterward bleeker street is just a few blocks down- live jazz music.
-start on 57th street on the west side- parker meridian hotel. facing check in desk go around the right side, behind curtains there is a dark corridor that leads into a small room with panelling where they serve hamburgers and fries- best you ever had. get a sack full and walk up to central park- stay on the east side there are a lot of nice places to picnic and some great things to see. keep going until you reach the met in the 80s- cool off and enjoy the viewing. the ancient egypt exhibit right now is awesome.
-shopping on madison is fun. start in the 80s and you will hit all the great stores as you head downtown. I'd have brunch at sarabeth's in the basement of the whitney museum on 75th. as you get in the low 60s, you will hit the apple store (actually on 5th), fao schwarz and barney's. go up to fred's which is at the top of barney's in the 60s- great place to have a drink.
you want some nightlife suggestions?

Eat, Drink and be Merry. Go to Puglios in Little Italy and sing with TONY. He looks just like Frank Sinatra, Go to SOHO...Canal and Broadway, ask for Infinte Davis, He can get you anything you want, cheap. (great Fendi Purses) The museums are the best on earth, the shows are great but expensive unless you already have tickets. Wicked is superb. Take a carriage ride in Central Park, see the sea lions at the zoo. Play the BIG piano in FOA Schwartz.

I lived there for 4 years right after college so I would visit all of my favorite places. First stop: Pastis for steak frites and bearnaise sauce. Luckily for me, my sister lives there so I can go whenever I want.
