Nirvana and Kurt Cobain were the poster kids for the Grunge scene that came out of Seatle in the 90's. That's why he's a "legend". I wouldn't consider him a legend though.
Nirvana is great but their music is really simplistic.

Kurt Cobain and his Grunge music came at a time where most music was terribly comercial. He came in with a smart *** atitude and won the crowd over. Many ppl were looking for something diferent, something in a way, revolutionary, a way out, a way to disconnect from daily rules and rebel.
He didn't look like a guy that wanted to be popular, he had a simple look, a look that said he wasn't trying to have a rock image, he had a rock spirit, which is much more important. In other words, he wasn't a poser.
His lyrics comunicated, and still comunicate with the soul and feeling of so many ppl out there (mostly teens). It gives you a feeling that you're not alone, you're not the only one that's f****d up and has problems.
Not only did he send out a message, he did it in a smart way, his lyrics were (are) brilliant, I don't think anyone can deny that. His thoughts and feelings that he comunicated through his music were and still are very universal feelings (even if some wish to deny it).
It wasn't just depressing music, it was soulful, and political at times.

Well, it must be for some reason other than his guitar playing and his ability to sing in tune.
Judging by the responses here, I guess he must be a good songwriter...which leads me to believe that there must be some really great songs in his catalog that I've never heard (and, to be fair, I've avoided a lot of Nirvana's music). Most of the Nirvana songs I've heard are pretty predictable in terms of structure and chord progression. I find it hard to say that stringing together four chords for a verse, four chords for a chorus, a noisy and sloppily-played bridge/guitar solo makes one a good songwriter. Maybe there's something in the lyrics...which always struck me as a series of unrelated thoughts strung together for the sake of stringing together unrelated thoughts.
But I will give him credit for being an early voice in the grunge genre. Unfortunately, he also proved to the world that you don't have to know how to play your instrument in order to be famous...

i don't get it. Why grow to be a performer and get a record deal in case you do not choose the repute? He could desire to've rather been a rubbish guy and only had a band on the factor if he did not choose the situation. I wasn't partial to the grunge scene yet I watched the documentary Kurt & Courtney and he replaced into for sure a stricken guy. i think of he could've killed himself no be counted how his existence went.

Not only did he introduce Grundge music to the mainstream in the '90s. He also died tragically.
Many artists suffer angst especially those who become super popular. Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe all became legends because of their tragic suicides/drug overdoses.
If he were alive today he might be mostly forgotten unless he was able to keep evolving his music.

Because he was in the very first grunge band in the world and because of his song Smells Like Teen Spirit, the old fashioned heavy metal music (hair, glam) were ignored by the people. He is a good song writer but he probably was the crappiest guitar player back then.

Although there are plenty of better grunge artists out there, Nirvana was the staple for mainstream grunge. That's why he was considered a legend.

really, i have no clue
i love nirvana, and kurt cobain, but he was a terrible guitarist
i have no idea why rolling stone named him one of the greatist guitarists ever, their all ******
he had some good riffs, but that was the only thing on his part for guitars
and he was good at writing songs. ill give the man that. thats why i love nirvana. but he was stupid enough to marry courtney love (i REALLY HATE her- hole sucked)
truly, nirvana was like the pixies, except most people have never even heard of the pixies, i dont know why- they were cobains main influence
might be because his music was emotional - kind of like poetry- without being really wussy
and that he comitted suicide- he had a dark view on life unlike most people in the music buisness
thats my best guess

He represented a whole generation of early 90's teen angst. When grundge become the new movement, he was the biggest and most iconic figure in it.

Because he was at the forefront of grunge, the most unlikely genre phenomenon of our time. He was, and to some people still is, the face of grunge. Plus, he died in a very grungelike manner which immortalized him as its posterboy.
