Dear Lord, I surely would say so!

It takes all kind of minds. I teach, and there are students that leave my intellectual capacity in the dust... luckily, I am not egotistical :) Some teachers are though, and that is a very real concern. Some people cannot stand being *upped* by someone they are supposed to be teaching.

I look at it this way: 'smarter' isn't really the issue. Teaching (for me) is about taking a kid and guiding their interests, exposing them to new things... and yes... learning from them. Whatever the challenge is that the student needs, that is what I need to find. All the students in my classroom are gifts... we are a room of minds and hearts and perspectives.... and that in itself (with an emphasis on effective communication and respect) is a great start to learning anything.

In some way, all students have an area where they are *smarter* than their teachers. Some have all those areas covered! I worry not... I know that I am still needed. :)

Yes, That Is A BIG YES. I am one of those kids that is smarter that the teacher and I am glad that someone has finally realized that it is possible. I strongly dislike teachers who are close-minded because they want you to believe that they are right and that you are wrong. I often have good questions and many of them dont really recive an answer. Some teachers will try to find out more about the subject so that they can answer the student's question, but most don't. They are there to teach what the state tells them to and nothing more and that bugs me. I think that school is a big wwaste of my time because I am not learning things that I think will be useful to me in life after school. I like to be alone so I can think about things that nobody has really given me an answer to. I think about why people are so cruel to one another and why it seems that there is more bad than good. I ask 'Why do people believe in God? I think that something happened to create the universe and life but I dont belive that it was a person or god because how did they get there, who created them? I mean nothing against any religion I am just stating that I question everthing that I cant get a straight answer on. I am sure that there are adults that havent stopped to think about why things are and cant make the same connections as I can. I am anoyed by adults who think that because I'm 15, I am not old enough to know more than they do. Keep am open mind, you learn more, even if you disagree with it, then at least you know what other people think.

Yes. A teacher may be smarter than a student in a certain field, but may be lacking in other subjects.

For example, an Ethnicities teacher is smarter than his students in regards to Ethnicities, but his students are English and Math majors and know a lot more than he does in those fields.

If you mean by IQ the answer is yes

There are two bodies of evidence in most any question, both of them compelling. Which is why many scientist with high intelligent often disagree.

I think a real Teacher( not just one who has a piece of paper saying they are !!!!!!!) will open windows for a Student to arose their own thinking ability. And come to their own reasoning. In this case the" true" Teacher (by my definition of a teacher) would be the smarter.

That depends on the model of thought you possess concerning teaching. The most enduring model is that the teacher is all knowing and wise. However, even under that model the true teacher hopes to be surpassed by the student! For example, Christ told his disciples (students) that after they would recieve the Holy Ghost they would do greater works (miracles) than he did in the earth, (John 14:12 KJV) and He was the all knowing God in the flesh!

Carter G. Woodson said, "The end goal of education should not be to merely impart knowledge, but to teach the student to think and do for himself."

Teachers have content knowledge (they know what the districts want the students to learn and have methods to teach it) that surpasses the students' body of knowledge, but students can be better thinkers.

Cooperative learning, multiple intelligences and differentiated instruction designs allow students to approach core knowledge in ways that allow free thought and could demonstrate to students that they can embrace concepts in a fashion that surpasses the core content . So yes, students can be smarter than teachers. That is the goal of real education.

Just remember there is a difference between being smart and being intelligent!

Of course. No matter what you know or think you know, there is always someone who sees in a way you dont which can lead you to come to 'know' something else. I mean think about all of the 'student chaging teachers lives' stories....

Teacher is Student and Student is Teacher

As a teacher, I can tell you that I have had students "smarter" than me. By smarter, I mean they have a broader knowledge of other subjects. These have been my adult students, but many kids can have more potential for learning than their teachers.

I guess it all depends on the meaning you associate with smart--intelligent, knowledgeable, iq score, etc.

Yes, because it takes an understanding of the world to open horizons and students are often at the apex of that, where most instructer stop learning after crossing the hump in the hill

Oh God yes. I'm in college, and I've met plenty of professors I am smarter then. I've even taught them a few lessons. Yes, of course, a student can be smarter than a teacher.
