There is absolutly no proof that burping an infant helps ease gas pain. From the American Academy of Pediatrics. It does help to reduce the amount of spitting up. I suggest you burp your 4 week old every two ounces for that fact alone. It is a personal choice whether or not to. If you breast feed burp before starting the other side. If your baby does not burp after a couple of minutes, move on. He probably doesn't have to.

I would. Just because a lot of the time air bubbles get inhaled while feeding, and if they sit under all that milk in the babies stomach, when they burp, they tend to burp up more milk then normally. At one month you could probably do just twice during a bottle and maybe one time afterwards, but each baby is different.

Yes, you should always try to burp when that young. They may not always have gas but if you don't try, you could get a very fussy unhappy baby.

Sometimes mine won't burp and I'll lay her down or change her diaper and try burping her again after a few minutes. That usually works and she'll let out a good burp.

Sometimes when she fusses, all I have to do is pick her up and she'll let out a good one. Imagine going all that time with horrible gas pain just waiting for mommy to help you get it out!

at one month old most babies still need to be burped after every feeding or even in the middle of a feeding. the only real reason is the baby's comfort. if you don't burp him, and he burps on his own or you don't even know whether he's burped or not -- and he has no fussiness that's unusual or more than usual, then don't bother to purposely burp him or not do it as often. fi he's fine without it, he's fine.

Well, you don't have to, but I definately would recommend it because the little time to burp them will make them a WHOLE lot less irritable and fussy. When an air bubble gets trapped it causes crazy crying which makes the air bubble even worse. Many times Colic (crying non-stop) is due to air bubbles!

Yes. To help get the air out....I'm not sure why really, but if you don't he will probably throw up all over you. Good questioning though. I have 3 kids and have burped them all and never thought to ask why!

You should, yes. He'll be very uncomfortable if he has air in there, and will be more prone to spitting up if you don't try. He may not actually burp every time, but you should provide him with the opportunity.

yes absolutely. If you do not burp him he will get a big bubble in his tummy which isn't fun. Also, if you constantly don't burp him it can lead to colic, which trust me is no fun for anyone!

You do have to burp him, his stomach isn't capable yet of doing the reflux thing. If h's eating good, you shouldn't have to pat him on his back for too long. Just don't bounce him on your shoulder too much, he'll throw up. :))
