But when a man enters the military and becomes a "famous soldier" he is labeled as heroic?

A very good question, and as a woman who has served in the military I can say, from experience, that even today women are still not seen as 'natural' soldiers. To be such is to be far removed from the feminine qualities so designated by the society of the time. Some people (men and women) struggle with women who reject aspects of their traditional role and behaviour, and indeed the same can be said of men who display feminine qualities (whether gay or straight).

Hopefully, attitudes will change as the 'old school' dies out and a more egalitarian approach is adopted. Until then, women will need to continue to fight for their right to serve their countries, along side their male colleagues.

Fame, I have no problem with it, but it is when the soldier (regardless of gender) cashes in at others' expense. My other question, is the person in question a genuine hero?

A reference would be cool. I think you are referring to soldiers like Jessica Lynch? Many are upset about her celebrity status because the real hero's died; Jessica is said to have coward in the line of duty (official report, not mine). Furthermore, Jessica had engaged in lewd acts a few weeks prior to her capture (the released photographs were absolutely disgusting! She was also wearing the Army uniform during the lewd acts).

Then, a ghost writer proclaims all kinds of stuff about Jessica in a book, when in fact, it is completely not true (meaning lies).
I, for one, have always questioned ANY individual that cashes in on his or her service (while the real heroes are have long been killed in the line-of-duty).

Jessica's book is considered one of the worst flops ever. It didn't sell many copies at all.
