It's not really happy or sad... it's more like reflective with passion. It also depends on which part of the song.

It was better on stage, but here's a clip from the movie:

the message of the song is very uplifting and inspirational, but the place its comming from is very dark and dreary, its like light shinning through the clouds in a storm or something. you shouldnt sing it with some huge smile on your face, but be happy, and just be free. the message of the song is that no matter what happens in life, you should measure your time in love. so just be uplifing, maybe a small smile or something. learn a bit about the musical and the song, just think about it and everything should fall into place.

good luck!

If you have a director, you should ask them how they want this song to be interpreted. Other than that, you can simply go with the 'optimistic' expression, which is a gentle smile/grin. The song is about things changing, growing, dying with the overall feeling being that all this happens for the better...

Write the lyrics out manually, it will make them physical. Then read them back, aloud. How the lyrics make you feel when you read them is how you should perform the song for your audience. Remember NOT to close your eyes during the performance. You will notice many pop stars do this, but not theater people. It closes off your audience and gives them the impression that you are singing for yourself and not offering the song to them.
Good luck!

Neither.

It's a song about reminiscing, try to show that through your expressions. As you sing, think about what you would feel reflecting back on a tumultuous year, and display that.

I love that song, good luck to you.

This was the way it was performed in the movie musical.

Really, it is your own performance and it is PERFECTLY okay for you guys to put you own spin on it, Just have that all worked out ahead of time with the other performers andyou should do great! Now, have fun, go out there and 'break a leg'!

It should be natural. It's a simple song. You are way over thinking this. Feel what ever you want to when you hear the song.

You didn't say if you were a soloist.
Female Soloist: Happy, logical, realistic
Male Soloist: Realistic, not quite as happy, but upbeat

Everyone else: Happy! Realisticly happy!

It is a song about love!
