the cut is the most important characteristic, not just the shape but the quality of the cut, unfortunately there is no measurement of this.

It was once explained to me like this:
to cut a 1ct diamond perfectly it takes a 3ct piece of raw diamond, but that same 3ct piece of raw diamond could be cut into a 2ct diamond. the 2ct diamond will not have the correct angles on the faces, so the light will reflect through the diamond and out the bottom and sides. When properly cut, the 1ct diamond will refract the light through the diamond and back out the top giving it a true sparkle.

The best way to judge this is to take the diamond out into natural sunlight, compare two diamonds side by side, even if they are similar color, clarity, size, and cut you will notice one sparkling more than the other. This one is properly cut with the correct refraction angles, while the less-sparkley one was cut to maximum size but improper angles.

Hope this isn't too confusing, Good luck finding your perfect diamond.

I'd say color is the most important thing.. you dont want a diamond looking yellowish (unless you want a canary diamond). Next, Id say size is most important. Then clarity, then cut.

Clarity, I think, is the most important. A diamond needs to be clear and beutiful, clarity is important.

color,I would not want a pink, yellow or blue diamond ring. The entire idea of a diamond are diamonds are clear and have been for centuries.

i think you have to tak einto consideration what each person prefers, especailly when it comes to cut, then i would say that clarity and cost go hand in hand, try to get the best diamond you can within yor budget, i didnt get my dream diamond when we got married, but i did, for our 20th anniversary!!!!!

I think that size and color is most important because females love big beautiful rings!

Get a cubic zirconia - you can't tell the difference - and make a donation to the hungry and the needy...

umm Jewels - what do you think Karat means? SIZE! You can't say Carat is important but size isn't important because they are the same thing.

I'd rather have a small, perfect, clear diamond than a big flawed one. Flawless (or nearly flawless) diamonds are much more valuable.

Cut, absolutely. If cut improperly, your big, flawless, colorless diamond will look "Dead".. it will have no sparkle, no fire, the signatures of a truly fine diamond.

remember the four C's:

cut

clarity

color

carot (even though that starts with a K...i think...)

size isn't one. and that isn't the most important to me.

to me, it's the prettiness. will it go with only one outfit, or mix in to any occasion?
