I have a siberian hamster I left him with a sitter for 2 weeks who has cats, now that I have him back he has red sores on his glands and his fur seems patchy and scruffy plus he seems to be scratching more often. If this is fleas should I treat him with hamster flea powder or take him to the vets to check his sores first?

Flea tend to proceed to exist their host animal. So i does not complication too plenty. yet eggs could desire to fall off the animal and stay on your carpet. maximum suitable guess is to apply a number of that "earnings" for the cat(got here upon at vet sanatorium) and bomb the homestead with flea killer. yet shop the two ANIMALS!!! Hamster's tend to get eaten up greater by lice and mites, not fleas.

Hamsters don't get fleas - they don't have much blood so a flea infestation would kill them fairly quick!

This is most likely to be mites. Please go to the vet for some appropriate treatment, it won't be expensive. Just don't start plonking any shop bought rubbish on him!

EDIT: DO NOT put ANY flea treatment on a hamster! That would be a fast way to kill him!!

I wouldn't use anything on a hamster unless recommended by a vet, especially one with sores. This could really hurt. Look it up online, call a vet, etc., but check first.

Check with a vet first to make sure it is fleas and not mites or something totally different!

His glands should look red when he is in breeding condition, as for looking tatty if it is worrying you let a vet check him over.
