Are there universal ones I can buy? If so where? I looked on ebay but didn't find anything.

Fuel filters are cheap. Visit your Kawasaki dealer.

Use the web site pmk gave you.
I use Visu Fuel Filters on all my bikes.
Their inexpensive and do a great job.
Don't use the bulky fat ones.
They stick out to far and interfere with the routing of the fuel line.

You can use a generic fuel filter. You buy one that has ends that fit your fuel line hose, and chop the hose in half. Stick the hose on each end if the filter and you're good to go.

Just make sure you clamp the hose on good so it doesn't leak. Run the bike stationary for the while to make sure it isn't leaking.

You've already checked with a Kawasaki dealership? Isn't that the same as a 500R?

Try your local Penton or Bultaco dealer. I know the one on a 250 CZ will work also.
