I don't want a grandma car or anything like that. I also would like tips on how to deal with the sales people and stuff like that. Thanx.

Remember that the more common a car is, the easier it will be to find a good deal and to get work done on it when it needs it. The new FJs are pretty, but haven't been back on the market for long, so Toyota might still be working out the kinks of a (relatively) new model. VWs typically get high ratings, but are not as easy to get work done on as Hondas, Fords, etc, who obviously sell more cars in the US. Take your time, read reviews, and TEST DRIVE a bunch of cars before you commit to anything.

A good first car would be one that lasts long and doesn't cost you too much.

Even on a new car there are maintenance things that are not covered, the sad thing in the US is that most car loans are out-living the cars for first time buyers.

The FJ Cruiser is not overly practical. It takes premium gas, has huge blindspots and a pretty high sticker price.

For used cars there's a few diamonds in the rough out there. Intrepids with the 3.5L V6 have depreciated values because most of the Intrepids have a 2.7L engine that's simply flawed and costs a fortune to fix, the rest of the car isn't without flaws, but there's not many big ticket ones. The Pontiac Vibe is a joint venture between Toyota and Pontiac and therefore really has much of the Japanese quality built in with American depreciation.

Don't be afraid to go around and deal with sales people, just the answer is always no. Test drive some cares, 4-cylinders, V6's, imports, Americans, Sport-utes, cars. You gotta get a feel for what you need, like and want and then prioritize accordingly. There's no universally good first car answer, otherwise, we'd all be in the same cars. Please take the financial bit about car payments outlasting the car to heart.

Obviously you are in need of the magic answer. The best first car to own is the most mass produced car. Losts of cheap parts and knowledge to keep it running should it require service.

Foreign cars have two bad stigmas. When they go, they go and the parts are hard to get and are super expensive in comparison to an American highly mass produced car. I am partial to GM products as they have the best initial engineering and are easy and cheap to fix when something eventually wears out.

Before you make your decision, if buying used, have the car inspected and have them right down the costs to repair everything they find wrong with it.

Good Luck!

No, A TOYOTA FJ CRUISER WASTES A LOT OF GAS LIKE A HUMMER! So I would recommend getting a more fuel efficient car like the Mazda 3.

Personally I don't think you can beat a Ford Escort. I have had 3 and never had one of them in the shop for anything.

I think a nice Sedan would be ideal. (;
Everyone has one, but they are very reliable.
