Did Harpo Marx ever speak on film? From what I can tell he didnt. Why not?

He never spoke on film but he did appear on a couple talk shows as Arthur Marx and conversed. A very quiet man, with a distinctive New York accent, not harsh like Chico or Groucho. His character was mute so he did the same when he appeared in shows like "I Love Lucy". That's what people expected, and there probably still are old fans that would argue that he couldn't speak at all (a popular rumor in their day).

Harpo never spoke on film or TV. It was just part of his character. He could really talk in real life. He wrote a book years ago called "Harpo Speaks!" in which he recalls his life in show business.

yes apparently he did. But there was just one line.
He thought that was a bit too steep and had it cut, never to speak on film. Being hacked off with the film studio. I understand that film studios at that time were quite different from what they are today So it started as defiance and became a trademark

Many people believed he was mute. In fact, recordings of his voice can be found on the Internet, documentaries, and on bonus materials of Marx Brothers DVDs.
