why did it unexpectaly end? will it ever return?? will it ever continue?

It ended because the Anime caught up with the Manga. Even if they were going to continue at that moment, it would meant for them to produce filler episodes for an unknown amount of time. They just decided to end it and hopefully give enough time for the manga to get ahead.
They announced they will continue the story as an OVA series.

Raul was right about when the anime finally caught up with the manga and Japanese production company decided to end the anime. This was back in 2004. Then they came out with the 4th movie in December 2004. The anime was left when it's about volume 36 of the manga. Right now the manga is up to chapter 511 (Volume 50) and no sign of ending in the near future. The reason why production company hasn't done at least another movie between then and now is because Inuyasha is not as popular in Japan compare to US or Canada. I believe they will end up doing an OVA to summarize how they will kill Naraku but I really don't see that happening anytime soon.

The anime ended because of low ratings and lack of interest in Japan. Sunrise has no interest to start another anime season. All of the animators have moved on to other anime series. Sorry!
Cappucino lava, I'd like to know where you are getting your information, because neither Sunrise or Viz ever expressed an interest in reviving the anime or even considering an OVA.
