I almost drowned when I was a kid. I couldn't even begin to describe how I felt. Not only could I not breathe, and the water felt like it was crushing me, but the panic I felt was just awful. I felt like my heart was going to burst in my chest. I blacked out, and when I came to, I didn't know where the hell I was or what happened, so I panicked again. And I was coughing up all of this water and mud. I had a sore throat for weeks. It was just terrible. I won't go in water above my head now, and when I went to New York and had to get on a ferry, I had a hysterical panic attack and had to be taken off the boat.

I would definitely say not being able to breath , I've had pulmonary failure as a result of bad lungs and have also been in the Navy and experienced the power of water . It's true if you can't breath for nothing else matters .

It would be the part when you realize you only have a few seconds to live...your lungs are burning and you see all of your most signifigant moments in life flash before your eyes understanding that you will never be able to see your friends and family again,.....and then you realize all oxygen is cut off to your brain and you fade into unconsciousness and slowly but surely the water seeps in through your nose and mouth as you quickly fade away unto your watery grave!

I know it sounds weird but 90% of all drownings are "Dry" drowings :IE: no water ever hits the lungs but for me it would be the breathing thing

I don't mind not being able to breathe. It is the getting wet part that I don't like. I am afraid my clothes will shrink.

Not being able to breath. Fear that in any second I'm going to inhale all of this water, then Poof! it's all over with.....goodbye world

Truthfully, the worst part is the realization that you're not going to save yourself. Rage, grief, fear, regret and anticipation of what's next is all there in one second. And it hurts like heck when your bronchial tubes try to close to save you. Definitely not something anyone wants to do.
