I would see a solicitor just for some advice, if you can't afford one then try your local citizens advice bureau.

Dear Janeb, This is typical employer behaviour which has cursed our world of work for hundreds of years and still the employee has to suffer the consequences of employers who seem to have the god given right to manipulate its employees as they see fit without fear of remonstration. Since Margaret Hilda Thatcher destroyed the unions, employees have very few rights and you will have to accept that they will always be right and you will always be wrong. If the job advertisement did not include the terms and conditions that you have explained, then they are in breach of advertising standards and jobs description with related salary bands. You could go to a tribunal but the employer will find a way to get shut of you. Just imagine the national minimum wage. Would an employer paying that miserable wage expect the employee to work in an attitude of national minimum effort Good luck to you, sir, anyway!!!

You say you "accepted the job". How did you accept? If you have signed a document saying you will be paid an agreed sum and there is no mention of a "trial period " in it, then you should insist on that amount. If you have not read the docments clearly or have no written back-up then you're stuffed. You either go back to your old employer "cap in hand" and ask for your old job back, accept the new arrangements or go on the dole and put your case to the lawyers. If you have written papers" specifying 27k and no mention of that being after 6 months, tell the new employer that and insist on it.

Sounds like fraud. But they can do that, and you can tell them to shove it. ~
I would ask them why they weren't up front about that and that I don't think I would be happy working with a company that is obviously dishonest in their dealings. Since YOU cherish your integrity.
If you had the offer in writing (newspaper ad is fine!), check with an attorney what recourse you have. Otherwise it is just your word against theirs.
At least get paid for the time they wasted (50 pound/hr)
If you quit your previous job based on their offer, by all means sue.

I would have thought that you should start the job on the salary that it was advertised at. They may throw the "small print" argument at you. Personally I would either consult their HR department or go to the CSA with all the paperwork / adverts etc.

Next time, get it in writing.
If you are not in government or have a contract, you are most likely an employee at will, which gives both you and your employer the right to terminate at any time for any reason.
Work your probationary period and don't complain, prove you can take it and still work. It might be a test.

that's definitely a lawsuit there. If they did not inform you of the starting salary and they told you agreed to the 27540 ammount and there is no where mentioned of this starting salary in your papers you signed then you can sue.

if you signed a contract they can not due that, they have to pay you the specified amount in the contract, how ever as you mentioned you may not want to make waves before you start, what you have to think about is do you really want to work for a company that does that to its employees?

no, but i would not want to work for a company that would consider doing such a thing. shady practice. dont do it, i bet they have caught loads of people out the same way.
