Of all the young people that I know, including myself, I only know two that are conservative. Granted that doesn't mean that there isn't conservative youth, but I think what you are describing could be. Bush is one of the most polarizing presidents in American history, and the stuff he is doing may be driving people to liberalism. Just a theory though.

Right, And CNN was fighting for the rights of transgendered people too this past weekend. CNN is no longer "news" its leftist propoganda. This is why is ratings continue to fall. From my viewpoint, young folks are probably more liberal than ever before. Since education have been transformed into indoctrincation camps, this inculcation of political ideology continues through college. Thankfully, I was able to see through the crap early on. Its natural for many left leaning folks to turn more to the right as they get older and wiser. Since liberalism preys on feeble mindedness, its only logical the least informed yet most vociferously involved groups are liberals. Also, where children are reared must be taking into account. Example, a person reared in Kansas is more likely to conservative, whereas a San Franciscoan is probably liberal.

The younger generation does tend to be more liberal, however if you look at the amount of liberalism, the 60's and 70's saw much more liberal youngins than you see today. Today's young liberals are a little more conservative.

well i think people are becoming more liberal but will state that they are conservative.
so much of what it means to be liberal has been institutionalized in america that it's lost to the sight of what we look for in our lives.
we all wear seatbelts, expect the fda to keep our food supply safe, expect safe work environments with sane work days, don't hesitate to call the police or fire department if there is any kind of trouble and don't hesitate to disagree with the government if we chose to.
all of these things are just a part of every day american life and all are very liberal ideas that were advanced against the vehement objections of conservatives of the day, who have now been long lost to our memories.
today's real conservatives will also not stand the test of time...

Just more aware of themselves and the world around them. As young people they are more apt to notice the "unfairness" in our country. They're generally still very idealistic, we can change things for the better. It's life. I do think America has changed in the sense our thinking and our perceptions are always changing and we no longer live in the mentality of keeping things behind the bedroom door. There's much more discussion in my family about realities in life, having choices, responsibility for yourself, always keeping the gray mush running, especially out with friends, religion, politics, telling the truth, etc. My girlfriend has a daughter about to turn sixteen. I have spoken to her about everything, their parents divorce, getting high, peer pressure and how in ways being a teen is going to be probably the hardest part of her life and the best. Treating others the way she wants to be treated and of course sex. I embarrass the poor kid, but I'm honest and very blunt. A stiff young pr!ck has no conscience, don't let it ruin your life before it really gets going. Her parents were smart enough she is now taking the pill. I think they are not necessarily more conservative, rather they are making smarter decisions.

Well, they are more liberal in their acceptance of things like race and sexuality. Also, I work with many students who are religious and conservative yet would easily be labeled a liberal by some of the right wing extreme, so I would have to agree.

As a general rule, I think that young people get more liberal with each passing generation. Doesn't it also depend on who you're comparing, though? There are always going to be differences when you take "class" (using that term loosely, mind you) and lifestyle into account, dontcha think? Not to even mention upbringing.

Did they give a single reason why? Or just made statements?
Based on my own circle, I'd say people are more politically liberal, personally conservative.

I don't think the survey compared age groups, it just compared self-identification of young people now and then. This study was geographically broadly based, so likely to give the big picture. If you want to know what questions the young people were asked, here is the story:
