some can breath an upwards of 30 mins to an hour, usually depending on breed and size. They are also awesome swimmers, and probably resurfaced somewhere you could not see it. If this is a temporary pond, like the ones in Central Texas form all the rain, they are not really that deep, and the turtle should be fine. Sorry your turtle experiance was soured!

Assuming it is a water turtle of some kind, they can hold thier breath if necessary for almost an hour, although they usually only do it for 15-30 minutes, depending on size and species.
When startled, they will hide on the bottom, or find a nice patch of vegetaion to resurface at, just poking a tiny bit of their nose up most often.
They swim well, and probably just went further away than you think.
THANK YOU for letting it go!

They cant breathe under water, they can stay underwater without taking another breathe for probably 15-30mins. But if there were weeds by the shore of the pond it probably went there and was watching you and waiting until you guys left to swim around. Thats what probably happened, it must have found a secure place to rest until it felt comfortable to move around the pond.

Wows.
If that was a land turtle (a tortoise) It wouldve drowned.
But If it was an aquatice turtle, They can be underwater for several hours without drowing.

It depends on the species. Some can hold it for an hour or longer. Eight minutes should be fine. I'd say it swam away.

Why did you wait? Is it a LAND turtle, called a tortoise, or a true water turtle? If he landed on his back and couldn't right himself, he may have drowned. Has anyone checked?
