I have a Compaq Presario 8000Z (pc2100) desktop machine and I did the IDE DPS self-test. The results: "Test failed. Drive replacement recommended."
The model of the dead drive is ST340016A
The firmware is 3.10
Location is Primary Drive 0
Is there a web site that can do for me what Crucial.com does for figuring out the RAM type?
Or, heck, I'm happy to stroll into the local CompUSA with this same information if that works, too.
Thanks for any help!

If it's relevant, this hard drive failure occurred (ostensibly) while trying to install Kubuntu Feisty after getting rid of Windoze XP Home. I have been getting GRUB errors, which might mean I shmucked up the partitioning somehow.

Any ide hard drive will work (should say 3.5" ide hard drive on the box). 3.5" is the size of the drive bay. Western digital drives seem to be a good buy for the money, I have an 6 year old western digital drive that still works. Since you were trying to install Kubuntu it might just be a compatibility between your computer and Kubuntu. You might want to try another version of Linux like Fedora. otherwise try getting a new drive.

Here is your info... You can go with an 80 GB now maybe even a 120GB Look for 7200 RPM ...it will help with speed a little bit. You will be a little hard pressed to find a 5400RPM drive anyway as they are a lower end Hard drive.

Seagate Barracuda ATA IV ST340016A 40GB Hard Drive
(ATA-100, 7,200RPM, 2MB - MPN: ST340016A)
That is the hard drive you described however you do not need to stick with that brand. Any brand of IDE hard drive should work. Might want to stick to the same size though because I'm not sure how big that pc will support.

Seagate 40gb IDE.
So any IDE, while your doing it drives are so cheap now,
I would spring for a much larger drive, but if your happy with
40gb, stay.
But I hope you have your install disk.

Yeah dont complication. Its sooo common to get a brand new one guy. purely ask the keep proprietor to grant you an IDE not common force that has 20-pins thats it. There are like 2 varieties one is what you have and the different one is SATA and its documents cables at the instant are not as huge. you in user-friendly terms want an common not common force guy. purely goto the keep and m specific it will be like no difficulty in any respect yet i prefer to advise this time you get a Seagate as my Western Digitl Alsoi died soo without notice and Seagates are between the BESST not common drives. ok tc m chuffed to help you out in anyhting else.tc bye
