Don't throw the toys away or give them away, put them up and give your kids the chance to earn them back. I did something very similar when my kids were close to that age an it worked. If you give in now you will lose them forever, you have to take your respect from a child that young, they will test you and if they see you are a pushover or inconsistant they will tear you apart. Stay strong you are doing the right thing.

Don't give in to whinging girl! drives you crazy i know.

Thats the kind of thing i have done in the past , its shock tactics , give them the chance to empty a bag at a time and put the toys away where they belong and tell them next time you have to do this they won`t get the chance to empty the bags . Its not cruel at all .

I would not throw them out, and I would not clean their messes when they should do it. I would use time outs, 7 minutes for the 7 year old & 4 minutes for the 4 year old. I dole out the time outs when they do not clean. My kids straighten their mess, or they have a time out. I only tell them once to gather toys, and if they do not move they go to time out. After those few minutes in time out, they clean just fine, Mama.

Give them one bag back...tell them that IF they show that they can play with them for the rest of the day and pick them up before bath time tonight, then you will give them back and that they must clean them up each night. If they don't pick them up tonight, just put the bags away for awhile. You may want to get them started picking up and then step back and let them finish. Don't throw their toys away. It will teach them the wrong lesson...and they will be very hurt and associate it with you.

If you give in then they will see that all they have to do is cry and they will get their way. I think the best thing to do is stick by what you say. If you don't do what you say, they will stop believing your threats.
