I've tried a small "in-line" filter at the pump with no real results. Can hardly stand to brush my teeth, etc. its so bad. Don't know if a whole house "filter" or a water softener would be better. My neighbors, also on wells have the same issues!

We researched the best type of water purification system, and found that a distillery type will remove 100% of contaminants.

We could not budget one for the whole house, so we use a Multipure brand filter on our drinking water. It removes 98% of all contaminants, including odor.

The water may just need to be aerated. can you install a water tower and pump air through the water?

I've researched this topic thoroughly since I also have a well. You basically described everything bad that can go bad with water. It sounds like you will need the whole house reverse osmosis system. This is really what you need to alleviate all problems. If the $10,000 cost puts you off, then just go with the different filters and systems that they have at Sears for approx. $5000. Make sure you get a water test from Sears first. They are very helpful. hope everything works out for you.

By all means, have the water tested first. Then look into buying and installing a "whole house" water filter. These will remove most contaminants. These filters usually come with a separate softener unit.

I have well water too and I hate it I use to have the same problem you are having and I had a plumber to come out and he told me that when the people was drilling my well they must have hit a rock and grind that rock up and it look like dirt but it's sediment and he said it could take year or if ever for it to go away so he said for me to change my water filter as much as possible so it's getting better i have to go under my house and change that filter about every three months and I hate that because I'm afraid of rats and snakes but i just pray and tell god to help me to do it I'm going to change it today before it gets too hot outside wish me luck and I wish you luck with yours oh I forgot the smell might be coming from the calcium and lime build up in your water heater and mess up your anoint i don't know how to spell it but it can make your water spell like rotten eggs or fart

Send out a sample for analysis and see what it is you need to remove. Google "water treatment technologies" and go to the library to get the Consumer Reports angle on this. This will tell you what you need to fix the problem properly.

Depending upon the geology of your area, drilling a deeper well might be a better option. A different aquifer ( water table ) might provide better quality water.
