Replace your plug wires with high quality ones (I like the Standard brand). A bad wire can make the coil pack go bad.

I just went through this some problem with a Pontiac. I replaced a bad coil and two days later the car was acting up. It turns out that a plug wire had a bad spot and it was shorting out!! This was killing the coil pack!

New wires and new coil packs, and the car runs great!!

Dear Skylark-

Sounds like a mis-diagnosis to me.

Your vehicle has the first gereration DIS System, (Distriburotless Ignition System).

This system is controlled by the ICM, (Ignition Control Module), or as is more commonly known, the Spark Control Module. Needless to say it has about 1000 different names depending on manufacturer, but lets stick with GM nomenclature for now.

The ICM is controlled by the Crank Shaft Position Sensor and a Timing Sensor located on the Cam Shaft.

Due to GM's infinate wisdom and all knowing omnipitance, they decided to place this little object in an area that does not get much air flow.

Right between the two cam housings under a large plastic top concealed by the ignition coils, (Quad-4 Engine Right?).

Replace the ICM and ALL of the ignition coils. Yep expensive, but cheaper than a new car.

Unfortunately this design flaw, has created more trouble than its worth. However, when this engine is working properly its quite the beefy little street performer.

I hope that helps you out.

Coil over ignition is very reliable, to have one go out on you isnt uncommon though...but to have one go out in 3 years Id say was a defective part. I hope you demanded Genuine GM parts for your buick...otherwise they put the cheapest one they can find for it on. You MUST protect yourself and your car and demand ONLY genuine parts for your car...otherwise you get whatever they find for the best price...and you get what you pay for in the auto parts world

Bad plug wires and plugs could cause it.
