According to you, why are we there, what are we there for? I'm all for the troops, but I think that it's dumb that they are getting killed, poor fellows. What are we there for?

Mojo Jojo, I'm not asking for qotes from Hillarious Hitlary. I don't really care what she says, I might lean toward liberals slightly, I consider myself an openminded person, But I'm not quite that dumb. Bugs Bunny would make a better president than she would!

Initially I supported military action against Iraq. Saddam had dickked around the UN for over a decade, and even leading democrats were all for eliminating the threat he posed all during the Clinton administration (do I really need to list all of their quotes?) So initially, I was in full support of disarming Saddam and eliminating the threat I believe he posed.

Since then however, I have question why we are there because the mission has clearly changed. I am not a fan of nation building. I support military action to eliminate potential threats against our country, but I would much rather see the billions we're spending to rebuild Iraq put towards rebuilding New Orleans.

The only problem is that leaving now is not an option. The problems that would result would be FAR worse than the problems we face now. So I'm afraid.....it kind of is what it is at this point........

Aye, it is indeed a shame, that good young men lose their lives, to safe guard and help a country full of heathens and terrorists. Yet there are decent folk there, who've been dictated to and live in squalor and pain daily.

There's a fine line between deciding just what is unacceptable living conditions, and an even more fine line in determining if you have the right to/ or should intervene.

The question of why the Americans are there, is passe now.

WMD, oil, Bush leaving a legacy. Bleh, who cares. Even if WMD was a huge lie just made as an excuse, fine, I don't care. Who really expects the goverment to tell the average idiot the truth about war and terrorism? Come on, they had to change street signs back in the 90s from 'walk' 'don't walk' to symbols and pictures, because people are too stupid and cannot read.... so average idiot = well, idiot, who has no concept of politics.

We also have to consider that Bush was seemingly up a sh*t creek without a paddle when 9/11 happened. What other option did he have than to retaliate?

We must remember that America and similar countries as well as the u.N. are involved in way too many foreign relations than they should be. Because of this, it has become in their best interest to monitor and safe guard their intentions for the future. That doesn't mean that Bush is full of shi*t when he says he wants to bring democracy and freedom to Iraqi persons. That may well be entirely true, but America and the like are so wrapped up in other's business, they need to watch their backs, unfortunately.

What Scenic Point says above me is spot on and concise.

This war, if you can call it that, is going to take a while, and people should just get on with their lives and let it be. Harping on about 'oh they promised they'd let the troops come home' blah blah, is futile. There are no guarantees with war, so stop expecting.

We should just evacuate as many non hostiles as possible, then nuke the whole bloody region. Then storm in, take their land, oil and setup shop.

Bush had his mind set on invading Iraq, and he exploited 9/11 as justification for doing it. Please, people, don't buy this idea that we went there to take out a bad guy and establish freedom. If that were the case, we'd be invading China, Sudan, Burma, and any number of places run by totalitarian governments that brutalize their people. Instead, we actually do business with the likes of China and send them our jobs ... regardless of the fact that political and religious dissenters are tortured, jailed, and murdered there. And don't forget ... years ago, Rumsfeld shook Saddam's hand.

Our founding fathers understood that we couldn't be the world's policeman. We need to defend our own borders. Iraq never attacked us. There's no reason to be there. There never was.

At this point, we are there trying to stabilize the country, which is under terrorist attack abetted by several outside influences within the region.

Also, to keep Iran or some other country from seizing control.

Lastly, it is in our own longterm best interest to maintain our current relationship with the present government and also, our own military bases there.

I think that we are there to establish a military presence in the Middle East. Iraq was just an easy location to declare war on . . . Iran was not, and neither was Saudi Arabia. Hussein ignored the United nations, and Bush was the only one who was capable of standing up to that. . . the UN wanted nothing to do with it, but our representatives agreed with the intel, and decided to declare war. Clinton tried, but wasn't using the right head . . . . it's a touchy issue, but lately, it has proved to be necessary.

We are in Iraq for two reasons: Money and vengance. Money for Halliburton (and their stockholders), vengance for the plot against Bush's father. Cheney and Bush, something for everyone!
