He is a big left handed slugger from Texas that has a real shot with the Dodgers. He has some real pop in his bat and the Dodgers have indicated they are going to move Nomar to third base. Could they be opening a spot at first base for Loney? He will definitely be an impact player someday but it might not be this year. In 3-5 years I think you would be looking at 285-30-100. Remember, Dodger stadium is not a hitters ballpark.

The best source for this type of question is baseballprospectus.com. Their PECOTA system pairs every player's stats and profile with data from comparable players from the past. (I am a fan and a subscriber, but not otherwise related to this organization.) Based on Loney's stats prior to this year (mostly in the minors), they project about a 40% chance that he'll be a "star" in 2008 and 15% chance that he'll be a "superstar". Their over/under projection for the year 2010 is .299 / 19 HRs/ 81 RBI. That is his predicted best year, which is a good reminder that few players keep getting better and better as we expect. This projection is in line with other scouting reports I've seen which paint him as a good hitter but not a masher. He has certainly shown more power than that in his brief major league career, but I would not yet allow 7 good swings override his entire minor league history. At AAA this year, for example, he had only 1 HR in 291 Plate Appearances and only a .382 Slugging Percentage.

Loney is a big guy with tons of power. They have moved Garciapara to third, which means they are expecting Loney to get a lot more playing time and be the first baseman of the future. In 3-5 years, I think you could expect a batting average around .290, with 30-35 homers and 100 RBI's. He is playing in a pitcher's park, which could hinder his numbers a little.

James Loney will be an All Star in 3-5 years because he already is on fire and will only get better

I think he has the potiential to be a superstar if he stays healthy. He can be a regular 40 HR, 120 RBI if he was playing in a hitters ballpark every night.
