Some cities have unofficial programs for such situations. In my particular Wisconsin city, every year there is an organized drive to help oldsters and the infirm with such situations. Names are submitted, recipients chosen on need, and then the work starts. Assorted building supply firms donate materials, and assorted tradespeople donate a weekend worth of free labor to provide the sweat. I've partaken a few times in the past, lending my meager expertise wielding a paint brush.

Investigate to see if something similar exists in your area.

Check into a reverse mortgage. I am assuming that if the house has been in the family that long that it is paid off in full. A reverse mortgage will allow them to get a lump sum loan out of the equity that they already have in the house.

There is a brief summary of how these work on Wikipedia. Talk to a mortgage professional in your area who specializes in reverse mortgages.

You (and if you have them your siblings) should find a way to help. The house will go to you all anyway won't it.

This would be a good opportunity for you to feel like you earned it.
