when they teach you the dance/cheer, go home and practice until you have it memorized. most people wont remember. if you have it perfect the judges will look at you. also, work on toe touches and herkies. do splits. maybe take a tumbling or dance class. the easiest way to do that is to ask a friend if you can join them. most dance places allow trial classes.
During tryouts, be CONFIDENT! be LOUD! be ENERGETIC!
even if you mess up, keeeeep it up!! the thing people look at most is your SMILE!!! if you arent very good, but you smile a TON i bet youll still make it. All of theese things will help you SO much! believe me, i have been a judge and im a cheerleader. =D

You will need to know how to do a cartwheel. Probably a herky. The splits (Chinese and American). Maybe popcorn. They will most likely make you memorize like 3 cheers, make sure you practice alot. Be loud and smile alot even if you think your doing bad. Make sure you stretch out before doing any cheer. Practice your toe touch, you'll definitely need to know that. The higher you can get your legs the better, and same with your jump. Make sure you know how your hands go because younger usually do fists and older use blades. Your coach might make you make up your own cheer, they'll give you words but you will have to make up the routine. Don't tell alot of people about your routine or show them because alot of people will take your stuff. Also try to do alot of jumps in your routine if you have to make one.Thats about it..

AS A COACH... AND CHOREOGRAPHER... don't take the words of teenagers.
This is what we look for.
Hardwork during tryout clinics. You may not be the best but are you working your butt off trying to learn the material?
Personality. Smiles/Facials and loudness when saying the cheers. If we can't hear you a stand full of people won't hear you. SHARP STRAIGHT ARMS AND LEGS. Pointed toes. If the coaches give you suggestions... they will look to see if you followed their advice.
GOOD LUCK!

Take a tour of Cheerleading 101 and see what you need to learn: http://geocities.com/aescougarcheer/basics.htm
Just try to be confident in yourself and put on a great can-do attitude, but of course if you don't know how to do something then fall back to a will-try attitude. Never pretend you know something that you do not. :^)
Good luck!

Energy! Energy! And a BIG smile. You want to be just short of manic. Lots of bounce, even when you are standing still.
