Zn + S = ZnS
10g Zn => 10.0 / 65.38 = 0.153 moles
0.153 moles of S = 0.153 x 32.066 = 4.906 g
8g S - 4.906g = 3.09g
You are right and the book made a boo-boo.

3.1g is correct. The book is wrong. Total mass must be conserved. This of course assumes there are no other byproducts of the reaction.
