What goes during commercials in award shows?

I was watching the BET awards last night and I wondered what kind of entertainment they provide their attendees while they went on commercial breaks.

LIVE award shows, that is.

I've seen several T V Shows filmed and during the breaks someone tells a joke or two or there is a lapse when it is announced that there is a commercial break and everyone starts chatting. Alternatively the show is filmed in it's entirety and the breaks are inserted later so as the show doesn't stop there is no natural break for anything to happen.
