You're absolutely right. People only care about breaking the law if there's a chance of them getting caught...

Yes they should be.
But then, we would have to come up with a way for an employer to know if someone is illegal or legal.
Currently we do not have anyway an employer can determine that.
You can buy a fake drivers license and SS card for $400.
Employers have no way to verify if the documents are legal or forgeries.
A company up in MASS, actually received a letter from the US Justice Dept, telling them they were going to far, in trying to find out if new employees were here legally or not.
What makes it worse, is less than a year after the letter, INS raided that company for hiring illegals.
Every single illegal employed by that company, had proper documentation.
Now if the INS could determine that some employees are illegal, why didn't they tell the company in the first place ?
The whole immigration system is out of wack.
How many real Americans lives have been effected, by illegals using stolen SS numbers and ruining peoples credit ?

I am not right wing, I am a liberal, and I oppose amnesty, because I don't believe that the illegals should be allowed to stay, and bring down the wage base, and there are just a lot of things in the amnesty bill that is unfair to the rest of us. But, I don't believe that they are the real criminals, and I don't think they should be punished, I just think they should be deported.
The real criminals are the people who hire illegals, and they should definitely be punished, with stiff fines or prison time.
And, the worst criminals of all, are the large Corporations, who actually invite, and in many cases...smuggle them up here, so that they can exploit the cheap labor! I believe that these large corporations are the ones this amnesty bill is intended to benefit! *sm*

I'm a liberal here, lets face it, hiring an illegal here or paying some Filipino1 dollar a day to do the same job is no real difference except for the cost to the consumer is higher for the shipping overseas, so unless you buy only Dexter shoes, do you really have a box to stand on?

People aren't going to answer a question based on a premise they don't accept. Your argument rests on the premise that all employers knowingly hire illegal aliens and that entering this country illegally and hiring people are comparable crimes to legislate against. Knowingly hiring illegal aliens and refusing to verify I9 paperwork is against the law. You're assuming any illegal alien that works in the United States is forthright about their immigration status and that all employers are aware of it. In order to construct the premise you're building for this attack, at least, those are the assumptions you would have to make. And they are wrong.
If you're going to argue that a form of amnesty should be given, the burden of proof rests in your corner. It is unfair to construct a false premise and attack people for doubting a policy you support using a false dilemma. The debate isn't as simple as "amnesty for all" versus arresting "hundreds of thousands of Americans."

Yeesh... I sense a bit of hostility here, but I'll stick my neck out and answer.
YES! Every single business, corperation or otherwise that KNOWINGLY hires illegal alien CRIMINALS is breaking the law as well. Therefore, they should face consequences under the law. It's really VERY simple.

We have laws in this country, and if you are breaking law, you should be held accountable for that law being broken.
If you are a corporation who KNOWINGLY hires an illegal alient, you should be fined for each illegal alien that you have on your payroll at present. But it's not always easy to KNOW that you're hiring an illegal because paperwork is fairly easy to come by on the black market.

I don't really care about the law. I care about justice (the two rarely overlap). If we didn't have to pay for social services or have regulations on wages/housing, illegal immigrants wouldn't be a problem. The way things are, however, they are a problem, and unjust. So are the employers who expect everyone else to abide by the rules they break.

I'm not sure how to answer this. You obviously don't know what's really happening with the new bill because you're stating that there is a Right Wing policy... That simply is not true. Both parties are struggling with all the issues up and down and on both sides.
Any answer you get could be left or right at this point.

You are SOOOOOOOO intelligent. You have us all cornered.
Do some research. They are already prosecuting those that have hired illegals. and YES this is the correct thing to do. It is the law.
