This may be a stupid question, I am not sure. I know I am going to be living in the dorms this fall because I'm all signed up already, but could I still be in a sorority? Or can you only be in one if you live in the sorority house? I'm wondering if I should sign up for sorority recruitment or not.

This depends on a number of things.
1) The sorority may or may not have a house. Not all do - and if you don't want to live in a house it may open up more potential organizations for you to consider.
2) The sorority may or may not require it's members to live in the house. Some require you to live there for 1 year, some for the entire college career - this may vary, so ask during rush.
3) The university may or may not require that you live in Greek housing. This information is usually available from the Greek Life or Greek Affairs office at your school. They would also be able to provide you with the information on the different housing requirements or options for each sorority on campus.
Signing up for recruitment does not obligate you to join a sorority. If you are considering joining, then I recommend that you go to the rush events. Even if you decide not to join it is a great way to meet some new people. It also gives you an opportunity to collect the information you're looking for about sororities.
As far as this fall, if you were already given a housing assignment your campus probably does not allow freshmen to live in greek housing. Rush/recruitment probably takes place after the semester starts. At many schools greek organizations do not recruit freshmen until spring - meaning if you decided to live in a sorority house it would not interfere with this semesters housing in the dorms. If you don't want to wait until fall to get the details, contact Greek Life at your university, they'll give you everything you need to know about your personal situation.

You will need to check with the sorority. Some sororities require some members to live in the house for a certain amount of time.....or a sorority might not have enough rooms for everyone who wants to live in the house. If you're interested in rushing you should definitely sign up for sorority recruitment. Be sure to ask the sororities this question during rush!

Definately =) Sorority houses are for people later on once they get in and want to live with their fellow sisters. I have a lot of friends that joined sororities and they all lived in the dorms. They don't expect you to live with them just yet. You have rush and if they want you, you get a bid from them and then start pledging for them.

usually freshman live only in dorms and don't join sororities until their sophomore years. you have to go through a process called "rush" to be invited to join. not all the girls that belong to a sorority live in the house.

Yes, at most schools you can live where you want to even if you are in a sorority

I think the soroity house is just a place to socialize, I don't think they are set up for people to live there.
