I just answered a question about Tank Jones and Vick. The question refered to the “Thug” attitude. Why do so many athletes have the “bad boy” or “Thug” or “ghetto” image? Is it just the “thing” right now or does it have something to do with the way they were brought up? Does it hurt the sport? And do you want your kids watching some NFL stars and think that all I have to do is make it through 2 years of school and get drafted? What ever happened to the American dream of getting a degree and being some body? I know you are going to say its all powered by money. But is there something deeper then that.

Please note: no reference was made towards race and this question has no intent to be offensive. The only intent is to better understand why people act the way they do. And in this case “Thuggish” “ghettoish” and “bad boy” way.

In America you are brought up to get a good education, good job, then retire. In 2007 that means you are working until you are 65 maybe even 70-75 if you have a family. The cost of living is going up, and the finner thing in life have always cost money. with that said.....IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. You stated what happend to growing up and wanting to be somebody. Well now days growing up and being somebody is growing up and being rich. You should have said growing up and contributing to society. Either way you work to make money, you go to school to make more of it, and all you want is a better life than growing up, and hopefully having someone to share that with. Leave the athletes alone. Jocks will be Jocks. They are gladiators, not role models. Gladiators are tough men a.k.a Bad boys. and if you had an opportunity to leave school early to be a head engineer, you would do the same......

It's all in their upbringing....you can take the man out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the man.

When you display the ghetto mentality all you are doing is impressing the ghetto....everybody else thinks you're a scumbag.

What's worse than the ghetto mentality is someone who's NOT from the ghetto acting ghetto..........what a loser.

I Think alot of ppl act the way they do to fit in. And yes, alot of the ppl with the thug look can be fake buht usually ppl can see thru that to the real ppl who have actually been thru struggles. In that case its the way theyre brought up, but i wouldnt see it as a bad thing. I personally like the "bad boy"/ "thug type because it's something i can relate to.

This isn't the only image that seems to get positive attention. Look at the bad girl movie stars. The more slutty they act, the more it seems they are accepted. I do not understand this mind set people have about the worse you act, the better it is.

I think they're representing where they came from. Its a human habit & its very normal. It may not be acceptable or comfortable for all ppl from differ cultures, but it happens in every group.

Everybody wants to be a bad-***.
If some of these wannabees were to find themselves in a real "situation" they would sh*t in their pants.
