Ok, I used to live down south(South Carolina/Florida) briefly and I live in DC and everyone thinks I'm from the backwoods and they say that I have a strong southern accent. I don't! Everyone says it's really strong and I act very polite and shy like a girl from the south.

Your accent may be stronger than you realize. However, your acquaintances sound ignorant. Southern accent does not equal backwoods. You should inform them that there are many big cities in the south and not all southern women are polite and shy. (They should be forced to watch a Designing Women marathon followed by Steel Magnolias)

Well if you have an accent, then maybe that's why. You may think you don't have an accent because your used to talking that way. So it's not noticeable to you.

Nobody up here talks with a Southern accent. And no I'm not being mean, this is my opinion!

Is that behind Tiger Woods??? LOL

JK---accents aren't noticeable to the people that have them. People in say Boston have accents too--in pronunciation and what not. Don't worry about it and be proud of your roots, they don't sound all that bad!! Just laugh and make light, and tell them that some day you will talk weird like them LOL!!

I'd love to hear your Southern accent, honey. I'm British and I'm fed up with the way British women talk. It sounds so flat.

I know how you feel. I live in Corpus Christi, Texas, which is way down south. My mom is white and my dad is hispanic. But my mom is so country and everybody says that my accent is just as bad as hers. I hear hers, but I can't hear mine. Odds are, you probably do have an accent and you are so used to hearing yourself that you can't hear it. But that's good, though, everybody's different. Everyone talks different, be proud.

What I think is funny is when someone says they're country just because they live in a small town or are from the south...that's like saying you're Chinese 'cause you eat ramen noodles
