I know what it means for the baby to drop, but I want to know what it feels like for the mother. Does it happen slowly over a few days or weeks, or just all of a sudden? Is it painful, uncomfortable, etc?

It is not extremely painful, but it does create discomfort between your legs especially while sitting. I would describe it more as pressure than pain. I would imagine it happens somewhat gradually over a week or two as most of the other discomforts late in pregnancy happen.

it happens over a few days/weeks. slowly, the baby just turns into birthing position. your doctor will tell you, (you can really feel it, other then kicking in your ribs) the dr can feel if the baby is in position or not. my son was in position for 3 weeks before i had him.
its not completely painful, un less you have a kicker. lol sometimes the baby will also slow down, you wont feel him as much as you did. in my case, my son NEVER slowed down, and even after my water broke he was still kicking; so it really varies.

suddenly one day you realize you can breathe and eat without discomfort, but you also have to pee even more, and you can feel some pressure in your pelvis. Its no more uncomfortable then the rest of pregnancy is!

it is when your baby settles down lower in your uterus... mine didnt hurt... but you will feel alot more pressure... usually you will notice that your belly seems to be carrying lower... and people will probably give you their two cents... and tell you ... but it is different for different people... mine took a few days... and did not hurt, just more pressure...

I didn't notice it myself. People just told me it looked like my belly was lower.
