& since that's the case, then why is everyone so repressive (strict) about it? Meaning that they have such negative opinions & shame about it.

Some people are repressive about sex. I guess because having sex in the wrong situation can be dangerous. If one is not careful about birth control, there can be pregnancy. If one is not careful about protection, a deadly STD can result. Whereas some of our other needs are so forgiving if we make a mistake. We can be hungry and need protein and vitamin filled food, but if we eat ice cream instead, it isn't too bad as we can always eat the right stuff next time.

I don't really think religion is to be blamed for it as some people have said. There are no religions I know of that are against sex.

Not everyone is repressive or has negative feelings/shame related to sex. The way we view or feel about sex has a lot to do with the culture in which we are immersed. For centuries, some religions have guided people's perceptions about sex by making it a sin. Even a person who is not a part of one of these religious groups may experience shame related to sex because some of these values have become so entrenched in society.
