I wonder what would have happened had Al Gore done the same?

- Vice President Exempts His Office from the Requirements for Protecting Classified Information

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/22/AR2007062201809.html - White House Defends Cheney's Refusal of Oversight

"White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Cheney is not obligated to submit to oversight by an office that safeguards classified information, as other members and parts of the executive branch are. Cheney's office has contended that it does not have to comply because the vice president serves as president of the Senate, which means that his office is not an "entity within the executive branch.""

Is this unprecedented? I'm curious to know whether anyone else in our history has taken this position in regards to VP status as not an "entity within the executive branch."

It's idiotic of him to even think that. His office is in the White House...the Executive branch's building.

According to US Law if he was NOT executive branch then he would have to resign before assuming office of President upon Elected President's death....that is not the case because he IS part of the executive branch.

Then again Dick and his President have shown a vast disdain for public law, common decency, and the Constitution. Both have declared themselves above the law and immune from all restrictions. They are un-American assholes

Doc2> Yes he is President of Senate but he has no authority over it or the votes. All the Vice President can do is cast a deciding vote if a ballot voting is tied..that is all.

So we're kissing reality goodbye again? The VP serves as both the President of the Senate and the Vice President of the United States. All VPs serve the same way, not just Cheney.

Wonder how the liberals would have reacted had Al Gore's budget been cut in half by partisans in Congress playing political games with vital government offices....

Bother me? No, because Cheney won't get away with it.

I find it extremely funny though, that Rahm Emanual is threatening to cut off the Office of the Vice President annual funding (to a tune of $4.5 million dollars) until Cheney complies. I hope they kick him out of the Naval Observatory as well.

I doubt Cheney could afford his staff on the "President of the Senate" annual funding.

Damn right it bothers me. Cheney thinks he is holier than thou. The 4th Executive Branch!
In the past Cheney has used his power to change legislation to once again benefit corporations and to appease his supporters.

It bothers me tremendously. Every time he avoids scrutiny, I think he's hiding something. If he just came out and addressed the issues up front he wouldn't have the credibility problems he has. In a way he's like Clinton and his "I didn't inhale," crap. If he'd just faced it right away he wouldn't have had to face the naysayers questioning his integrity.

On a quick digression, I bet Clinton is enjoying all the attention Cheney is receiving.

It does me. To those that defend it, i would suggest reading the constitution. Its states in very plain english that both the Pres and the VP are part of the EXECUTIVE branch. There is no exceptions in it. It is black letter law in a only a few sentences that even the dumbest wannabe conservative can understand.

Not really, he is president of the senate, which is the legislative branch, and VP which is the exec. branch, he's a bit of a political hermaphrodite!!! My public service announcement for the day, "The more you know"

There has been alot of questions and answers on here pertaining to this exact thing in the last few days. It bothers many people as he is a member of the executive branch and people do not like it when our leaders lie about such things.

For Mr Cheney, the Constitution is a hinderence, not a guide.

Yes, it bothers me a lot. It's a great insurance policy for Bush - just think what would happen if HE were President?!

If anyone HASN'T been bothered by Cheney over the past 6 and a half years, there's something wrong with them.
