It can range. I think the average is like 5-6 months but every baby is different. My daughter started around 5 months though.

Your baby will probably learn to sit independently between the ages of 4 and 7 months. Most babies can sit well for several minutes without support by the time they're 8 months old.

All babies are different, but my 8 month old really didn't start sitting up on her own until between 5 and 6 mos. She crawled for a week and is now trying to walk everywhere!! You can buy this really neat seat called a Bumpie (?) at Babies R Us that will help them master the skills/muscles to sit up alone. It wont let them fall out of it either so you don't have to worry!

The average age is 6 months. Some babies are closer to 6 months and some not until 8 months. Every baby is different (gosh how I hate saying that) but it's true, but 6 months is the "milestone" when doctors start asking whether they can.

My son sat up at 7 months, and my daugher at 8 months. My son is now 4 and very bright. My daugher is 14 months old - she can do baby signs for several words, can say several words, but she is not walking. The dr. says she is physically fine, she just moves at her own pace. Try not to worry too much if your baby is not sitting up yet.

my baby is 4months he his getting close i can see his progress. first they should be trying to sit up when lying down. Next when they are sitting up with their back against something they tend to pull away. after that the sit up with the assistance of their hands, kinda like a tripod, this is the point that they are some what unsteady and can fall forward or backwards so watch out. Next is sitting up unassisted by there hands usually around 6 months.

most babies can sit up aided once they have good neck support, as they get stronger you can try them without support, and youll find they slowly get better at sitting up, most babies can sit up unaided for a few minutes around 5-6 months, by 10 months they should be able to sit up very well by themselves.

Each baby is very different, I have noticed the babies that dont sit up/crawl/walk early often end up being the talkative ones lol! it is thought that they often find doing too much hard on their bodies so some babies that get a lot of teeth early end up being a bit late to reach milestones etc. but of course there are exceptions to that rule.

Goodluck and dont worry, enjoy your bubs, they grow up too fast!

About 6 months. BabyCenter.com has great charts of all the developmental milestones up to 5 years I think. Here's the birth to 36 months charts:

My daughter is 6 months and she can sit by herself, except when she gets excited, she falls over to the side or falls back. So, she hasn't quite mastered it yet. Close though!
