I personally recommend Fly For Fun or any of the other games at gpotato.com. They're cool and they're free.

One of the few MMOs that doesn't follow that concept is EVE Online. You get "strong" by studying. You get money by making your spaceship shoot pirates and other player's spaceships out of the sky and looting their "corpses."
MMOs are basically MMOs. Same formula. If you don't like killing little furry things or other players, then you most likely want a "virtual community" like Second Life or The Sims Online, not a traditional MMO.
However, because there are no little furry things to kill (or big ugly things for that matter), there's usually a lot of "good feeling" going on in the community. Be on the lookout for virtual brothels and such, where you can go and have cybersex with the avatar of your dreams.
Ho hum...I think I'd rather kill bunnies.
And may I say that just as virtual brothels are not the primary focus of virtual communities, killing little animals is not the primary focus of traditional MMOs. Killing BIG animals now....that's another story! ;-}

To fit your criteria, I think Guild Wars would be a good game for you. It's very different from other games, because of the low level cap and the heavy emphasis on PVP. If you're in a serious PVP guild you'll be talking to these guys for hours a day and really feel like a part of the community.
Edit: Oh and Second Life seems like it has a good community. Plus you make money.
