Ok well i went to a meeting at my high school about applying for colleges this year and the diffrent things we can get involved in at college. Well of course sororities and fraternities came up. I told my dad that being in a sororitie was something that i really wanted to do when i got to college and he told me that are nothing but a scam because all they want is your money. Is this true? It doesent seem that way to be but idk. So is that true?
And i dont been to offend anybody by what my dad said.

Sororities are rarely a scam. For many groups the membership fees are quite substantial however, especially when you are first joining. As with any business (and a national sorority will be registered with the US government) you can request a copy of the financial records from the national and chapter treasurers to see where your money is going. A lot of times the costs go up if you have a house - but these costs are often lower than what it would be to stay in university housing - and often include meals, laundry facilities, etc.
I would recommend making sure you are part of a national organization - a sorority that has chapters at more than just your school, and a board of directors that oversees what is being done at the chapters - this helps give you the security that a group of undergraduates are not responsible for the thousands of dollars you will pay them and are not stealing or frivolously spending your dues money.
When rush begins make sure you ask what the membership dues are, what they money is being used for, and factor that into your decision when you're selecting an organization. Most importantly you just need to find an organization that is a good fit!

Fraternities or sororities usually need money in order to function: to throw party or do something else. Some fraternities (sororities) are good and some are bad! But I think you can really make friends there. I think it is worth, since you'll make network connections which will be helpful after you graduate. It may eventually not only bring friends but also find you job!

I have a lot of friends in fraternities. Well, first off, be aware that MOST frats and sororities are party central. Secondly, my frat friends say there are two types of sororities: the drunk sluts and the dorky girls that want to feel like they belong somewhere.

I'm not in a frat, but I still have plenty to do.
