Is this a generalized survival question?

If you suddenly wake up in the middle of the ocean, with no survival equipment? Just hope the end comes quickly.
The biggest risks are dehydration and exposure. During the day you may face sunstroke, at night, hypothermia. Life expectancy in the north Atlantic can be as low as 10-15 Min's without survival equipment before hypothermia kills. if you're wearing a flotation aid assume the "H.E.L.P." position. Draw your legs upto your chest and wrap your arms around your legs. This helps reduce the heat loss from your body (HELP= Heat Escape Lessening Procedure)

Without fresh water you will die within 3 days.

If you do hold out, then you may have predatory sharks to worry about. Even if you're not cut, sharks will be attracted by you urinating / defecating in the water.

This isnt astronomy. But there is a technique for survival float that may allow you to stay alive for 2 or so weeks. Read up on the survivors of the USS Indianapolis, a ship that was sunk in the pacific and the survivors endured the hell, and the sharks as well.

Why would you hang out in the middle of the ocean?

Stay afloat, and hope to spot a boat or plane that you can make contact with. That's the only way. You won't be able to get food or water out there, and you can only swim so many miles before you get fatigued.

It is nearly impossible.

you see. in an ocean... all the water is salt water.
you shouldn't drink salt water because all it does is make your body drier, and the water is not used to your benefit.
so unless you have fresh water, you will die of thirst.
and unless your have food, or are willing to eat your limbs of, you will die of hunger.
