Both.
The Yankees spend big bucks to get the best players. He is a manager of great players.
The Yankees have gone to the playoffs 9 years in a row. That takes some skill. He is a great manager for doing that.

Joe Torre is a great manager of people. He knows how to get the best results from his players and should be considered one of the top managers in baseball today. I am not a Yankee fan but have a lot of respect for his accomplishments.

Obviously the talent on the field is great -- baseball's best (probably).
I hate the Yanks so I *wish* George would fire him. LOL.
Joe Torre was a smart player and it was almost certain that he would manage someday. For the team and owner, I can't think of anyone that can handle the job better than Joe.
No one guy has all the answers though. Anyone here recall what Joe used to say about his right-hand man -- Don Zimmer?
Check the number of rings they've collected since Zim retired.

I think that Joe Torre is both. i think that he is a wonderful manager and he manages great players. Derek Jeter said “The last thing you need when you're not going well is to look over and see panic on your manager's face. With Joe, he always looks like he's in control. I mean, from being around him so long, I can tell when he's angry. But panic, that's something you'll never see from him.” Joe Torre always is in control. He never panics about anything and even if its the top of the ninth with the bases loaded with 2 outs he never panics he just makes that one call to the bullpen and takes that long walk out to the pitchers mound. He never gets fired up in the dugout and you dont see him knocking over water jugs either. He keeps his cool even when things are going rough. He has managed many great players in his lifetime like Derek Jeter, Gary Shefield, Bobby Abreu, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Roger Clemens, and Mike Mussina. He is a all-around great manager and he has managed many great players as well.
GO YANKEES!!!

I believe it is both. He is probably the best 'players manager' in all of baseball. When it comes to in game managing, thats where his skill are not the best. But you cant be a winner if you cant handle your players well.
Yes Torre has great players on his team but with his demeanor and his player managing ablility, he makes his great players even better.

first of all, i'm a purple Sox fan. I even have seen some video games the place judgements he's made i assumed had a damaging result on the recreation, and that befell approximately 4 situations. the guy's controlled what a million,a hundred-something wins and four WS and 13 submit Seasons with the Yankees. They (Steinbrenner & Sons or Cashman) are truly retarded to enable him bypass. Who the heck do they think of they are going to replace him with? Mattingly? Mattingly replaced right into a 1B, All-action picture star. stable Managers (of the established a Yankee supervisor could desire to be) are the two Catchers or Pitchers, no longer First Basemen. I mean his first year there he controlled a observe sequence win... yet another ingredient as quickly as we had that knuclkehead Dan Duquette he spent lots time blaming human beings ... after a on a similar time as there replaced into no one left in charge. a similar ingredient will take place to Cashman (who appears like a typical ny city sleaze bag in any case). back, as a purple Sox fan, it truly is large information. i'm hoping Torre is going to Texas, he can artwork some magic with them. he's an elegant guy and he will have a robust destiny. Yank followers get waiting for us to take many greater branch Pennants now which you have have been given in basic terms enable the main experienced and argueably the terrific supervisor in baseball walk out the door.

he is just a manager of great players. joe torre makes horrible decisions when it comes to bringing in and taking out pitchers, we also sucks at kbowing the right and wrong times to bring in a pinch hitter. he is a horrible manager, and should be much better with the teams he has managed.

Both really, he has great bought talent, but also does a super job of managing his personalities and the arrogance of his team ownership. He deserves considerable credit, even if he does have the highest salary in sports.
