Should I have gotten one a long time ago or is it normal for them to wait? I have another dr's appt on the 7th of July, should I expect one then?

One last thing... I promise! What exactly is the dr looking for during a physical exam?

This is my first pregnancy and any info helps. I look on all of the websites, but sometimes things are just too difficult to find.

Thanks in advance!!

The only time I had physical exams (I assume you mean a pelvic exam?) was at the beginning of my pregnancies (pap smear) and during the last month (to check for dilation and to sweep membranes.

In the mean time, there's really no reason for your doctor to have his hands up in there messing around, lol. It increases the risk of getting bacteria where it shouldn't be.

Here is the normal process. You call make an appointment, you go in fill out papers so they can make a chart or folder of your information and progress.First day you pee in a cup to test for sugar in your urine, take blood pressure, some may have a less advance sonogram machine that just measures how much the baby is, to approx, growth and age, time of conception. Then a pap smear and STI/HIV test to check for infections. Usually longer app. than the rest, because they are starting a new log for you. They counsel about a good diet, give prenatal vitamins or prescribe some, my doc was great and provided for me. He'll see if you might be a normal or high risk preg, usually can't diagnose til second appointment, which is 2-3 weeks later, then you will meet w/ your doc to see your pap and STI results. hope this helps! I know how you feel about doing your homework before you go to the doc, which is great, but don't worry about what to expect with your doc, its a great experience, and you should be happy, positive, and just go with the flow. I am now... but its a skill so practive makes perfect. oh and congrats

well...when did you call and let your ob/gyn know you were pregnant? sometimes they can only get you in after a few weeks. 14 weeks isn't too late but you should see one asap. during your 1st visit you'll have to answer all the standard mother/father family medical history stuff. they will confirm the pregnancy, do a pee sample, and do blood work. they might do an ultrasound (or schedule one if they only do them on certain days). they will do a typical pap smear like pelvic exam (and will continue to do these throughout the pregnancy).

go buy 'what to expect when you're expecting' it has all the info you need on baby's development/your body changes, and what to expect from doc's visits.

congrats and good luck!

your first appointment should have gone over your family history, the second appointment, they usually look inside quick to see how things look and then they feel your tummy, to make sure that your uterus is where it should be. they will also use the doppler to see if they can hear the heartbeat. i just had my third appt with my doctor and they checked for a heartbeat, checked my weight and blood pressure and asked if i had any questions or problems. since i haven't had any symptons, they told me that until the baby officially kicks in the next couple of weeks, that if i want reassurance, i could call and see if i could come in, just to hear the heartbeat. as you might hear from other people, there's a book called, what to expect when you're expecting. i got it 3 years ago after i had a miscarriage and just brought it out for this one. (currently 17.5 weeks) - Congrats & Good Luck!

The doctor probably didn't need to do a physical exam (a complete full body check over). I didn't have one done either. My regular doctor sent over a copy of my medical records and they can see that I've been healthy. The only thing that I needed done was a pelvic exam and a pap, since it was around the time I was due for another one anyways. If you are conserned contact your doctor and ask him why he didn't do it. It's never a bad thing to ask questions. I ask tons at all my appointments since it's my first also! Good luck!

It's usually good to get in one checkup during the first trimester but occasionally it happens that you don't realize you're pregnant until later and the doctor is booked for a few weeks.

It's not the end of the world but you want to get looked at to be sure everything is going as it should. You'll get an ultrasound and they'll check the heartbeat. They check weight gain too but since it's your first check, they won't have a baseline to compare to.

Get the book What to Expect When You're Expecting. It tells you week by week what's going on with your baby's development and what to expect at checkups.

I had my first exam at about 11 weeks because that's when i found out. During my first visit they did a pregnancy test and asked me all these questions and they may do a "physical" exam depending on the doctor. Good luck!!

You will most likely get one on your next visit but they usually only give the physical exams when they feel something is wrong or if you haven't had a pap smear.....as long as they are checking the heart beat and so forth you are fine. Good luck and congrats!

Generally the only things an obstetrician looks at are things that will affect the pregnancy. If you are wanting a complete physical over things that don't affect it, you should go to your regular doctor. But your OB is checking all sorts of things you may not be aware of, like blood pressure, anemia, all sorts of chemical levels in your blood, etc., so you're getting a pretty thorough going over anyway.

Yes, you should get one your next appointment and I'd be concerned if you did not. During a pap smear your doctor is looking for any infections or signs of abnormalities with any of your reproductive organs and abnormal cells that could lead to cancer. So this is very important.

Congrats on ur pregnancy!
