Can anyone give me a basic idea of how to become a sports journalist.

It probably depends on your age. If you are in school, write for the school newspaper. It's good initial experience and a way to see if you like it. If you do, you can perhaps offer to write for your hometown newspaper, which sometimes will take contributions on high school teams from young writers.

From there it's on to journalism school, and to entry-level jobs. You have to learn how to write a story, and it takes practice-practice-practice.

Notice I haven't mentioned sports yet. Obviously you can specialize on sports, but it's more important to be a journalist. Covering a game isn't about sports, it's about the reporting and writing. Take it from someone in the business, the games can blend together after a while.
