Can sort your clothes into three loads, darks, colors and whites. I include in the darks such stuff as jeans, black, navy, dark gray etc. Colors include, bright colored T-shirts, shorts, socks, undies. You can combine these two into one load if none of your colors will bleed. (like red, new jeans and such) Whites include,white/light colored undies, T-shirts,socks,shorts, pants, bras, etc. Do not put any brights or darks in with these.
Now you are ready to wash the darks in cold or warm water.. Which ever you prefer. Cool is good. If you have a lot of black stuff ya can buy a special soap just for blacks. This works well and keeps the black from fading. Almost never use HOT water. Many of the modern fabrics wrinkle and shrink from this. Also, high heat in the dryer can actually cause the fabric to wrinkle permanently. Use fabric softener too in all your loads. Remove clothes promptly from the dryer and you will never have to iron. Don't worry about bacteria in the washer. The heat in the dryer will kill the bacteria.

Just so you know….Washing machines have more bacteria and salmonella then raw chicken. It is a good idea to run a load with bleach and hot water often to keep the bacteria under control.
Dark color should be washed in cold water so the color do not run, with a good detergent.
Light color clothes in as warm as water as then can handle, with a good detergent and chlorine bleach if possible.
Under wear, socks, towels and sheets should be washed in hot water, a good detergent, and chlorine bleach.
Softener is optional on all loads.

I usually wash darks together in cold water, since the color tends to bleed less. And, it saves on the electric/gas bill a little. Your clothes will come out just as clean, I promise!
Just use a good detergent (name brand) because the generics have impurities that can dull your colors over time.

Cold water works best on darks. It not only keeps them from bleeding but it also helps keeps dark clothing from slowly fading over time

Another tip that I didn't see was to turn your dark clothes inside out. Especially, jeans that way if they fade, it's on the inside or if something bleeds on them... For darks alway cold water and hang or lay flat to dry...

hot water will make the colors run easier but soap doesn't always dissolve as well in cold water (especially if you are using powdered detergent) so I always use warm water setting with cold rinse for all colored loads and hot for whites.
