My second cousin and I have been having "fun" together for about a year. We work in the same building and she is kind of slow, so it makes it really easy. She is putting alot of pressure on me to make this official. I am trying to make a decision as to when to tell my wife what is going on, so that we can get married and start a new life. From what I understand, the law doesn't care about 2nd cousins, but I haven't done any research yet. Is this true?

You really need to determine how much you really like your cousin. Is it simply physical attraction or infatuation? If so, it will pass.

If you genuinely like your cousin on several levels, and she likes you in the same way, then there is NOTHING wrong with pursuing a relationship with your cousin.

Cousin couples are only a taboo in the United States. Most other countries accept such relationships and many actually prefer it to a certain degree. The additional closeness that comes from both being in love and having the close bond of being cousins is considered a blessing by many cultures.

Ignore the out-dated science and old wives tales about birth defects. That misinformation has been debunked. For example, did you know that the older a woman gets the higher the chances her newborns have of having birth defects. A 35-year old woman that gets pregnant has the same probability of having a baby with defects that two first cousins getting pregnant together have. That's a fact. So, ignore all the superstition about birth defects. That only applies to true incest (sisters, brothers, parents, etc.) and does NOT apply to cousins.

Nevertheless, there is a social stigma that comes with being a cousin couple in the USA. So, it's something that you as a family (her parents AND your parents) need to discuss in an intelligent non-judgemental manner. Without the blessings of the family you may find the relationship very lonely and awkward.

As far as I know it is not illegal. Why do some married men act in such scummy ways? Do you have children? How many lives are you ruining by your selfish acts? I guess we will all hear back from you, wanting to know how to dump this woman after you have cheated on her too. Do yourself a favor and do not marry, that way you can be selfish for the rest of your natural life and not hurt anyone else.

I'm pretty sure 1st and second cousin is illegal. 3rd cousin should be okay though. A little too close to the family tree for my taste, but to each thine own.
