I was just wondering because on the application it asks if you ever had one, and it says (you will not be automatically disqualified if you check yes) but I think thats BS. This question is for employers out there, have you ever hired anyone with a dui or criminal record or did you file their resume in the trash can?

It depends on the job. If you have to have a lisense for driving, like deliveries or company car, for your job then it is possible. It also depends on how long since you have had the DUI. If it has been long enough to have been cleared then you might be ok. If it is not for a driving job then no it will not be held against you.

A DUI raises a red flag! When you see a DUI on a persons record it raises a red flag about possible future times missed from work due to drinking related problems. Since I dealt with instructors when dean of the department, and with Maintenance Technicians when Maintenance supervisor, both of which jobs you needed the person there. And when Supervisor over Maintenance the person had to be be available for call in any time of the day or night and be sober. The answer to that is no I would not as a rule hire someone with a DUI.
The only time I approved the hiring of someone with a DUI was where I knew the person was basically a non drinker and the punch had been spiked at a party the person attended while still in college.

Think of it this way. You have 4 equally qualified candidates sitting on your desk. How do you decide? Well one has a DUI, so he's out.
